Vermont Wind Ensemble Auditions

We try to accommodate every student who wants to participate in Wind Ensemble, but since the instrumentation of the group
needs to be well balanced, and the repertoire is advanced, some players may not be able to be placed.

Audition Requirements 2024-25

Students audition for Wind Ensemble once every year: either in the Fall or in the Spring (for those who didn't play in the Fall).  You may do an in-person audition or make an audition video.

In-person audition: I've set aside the first rehearsal time of the semester for in-person auditions.  Please e-mail me to schedule during that time or earlier that day if preferable.

Video audition: You'll find a Placement Audition assignment in BrightSpace (under the Table of Contents) - you should be able to attach the video and submit there.  Please save the video in either .mov (Apple) or .mp4 (Windows and Android) format to make it easier for me to view.  Please read the detailed instructions found hereIf you have trouble with BrightSpace you can use the UVM File Transfer Service to send me the file. You can submit the video anytime, but definitely by Monday, Sept 2 (Labor Day) at midnight.

You should play 3 major scales, a minor scale, a chromatic scale, and an etude or a section of a solo or concerto:

1. The following scales in at least 2 octaves whenever possible (the more octaves you do, the better your score will be); scales should be fairly fast, but there are no specific rhythm requirements; these are NOT concert scales (i.e., start on your C, A-flat, E, etc.):
        C Major
        A-flat Major
        E Major
The minor scale or your choice (please do all three forms if possible)
Chromatic scale of your choice (full octaves only)
NOTE:  Please tell me which scale you're playing before you play it and don't forget to introduce yourself at the beginning of the video!

2.  Etude or excerpt from a solo/solos
This should be 5-10 minutes that demonstrates your technical ability as well as your musicality (feel free to jump around in a piece or play a section of one piece and a different section of another - whatever best demonstrations your technical and musical abilities).  Typically, these are solos that are used for District, Area-All State, All-State, and other music festivals.

Contact Prof. Toner if you have specific repertoire questions.
